MEET DEE BROWN
Hey everybody let me introduce you to a guy named “D” or Dee, whatever your preference may be. Dee is 24 years old and falls under the sign of the Aquarius. He was born in a small town called Portsmouth, VA. But was raised primarily in sunny San Diego. Aside from dancing Dee enjoys horseback riding, kayaking, and long walks on the beach… just kidding! What he really gets his kicks from is football, playing it, whether it be live or on a video game, watching it and even talking about it. Dee also likes to play video games as mentioned before. Dee also likes to get out and about and try new things too, and of course eating and trying new foods, and just being with friends. Dee has always enjoyed dancing but never thought of it as something to pursue seriously. To him it was all just fun, dancing in talent shows, school dances and later on in life nightclubs. It wasn’t until January of 2001when he got serious about dancing. Walking around the semester before at Grossmont college he found a hip hop class and it looked like fun so in the Spring of 2001 he gladly enrolled under the instruction of culture shock alumni Darla Gonzalez. She taught him the ropes, the basics, the fundamentals, and she was the start of his hip-hop training. A couple of months went by and Dee was steadily and rapidly improving and Darla suggest that he audition with this new hip- hop troupe called UrbanFX. He took her advice, auditioned and made the cut and is still there. Training under Vanessa Andrada and Jimrod Gonzalez he did nothing less than grow at rapid speeds as a dancer. Before his first year was over he was chosen to dance in a show with Unity Dance Ensemble by Tessandra Chavez as one of her hip- hop all-stars. So his training got even deeper, and more intense with her help. To add a bit more, he also received help in getting better by working with former UrbanFX dancer and roommate, Jaffar Smith and current UrbanFX dancer KJ Gonzalez. After one year with the team Dee started to go to L.A. auditions and soon enough he signed with D.D.O. artist agency in the summer of 2002. He received no work under the representation of D.D.O. so the following year, 2003, right before summer began he made the switch to Bloc Artist Agency, with the help of a recommendation from a friend in the L.A. dance industry, and about a month or so later he got his first dancing job, doing spot dates with R&B artist Ashanti, that consisted of, the BET Music awards ’03, the “Today Show” in N.Y., and the Pepsi Smash. In the same year following the Ashanti gig, He worked with choreographer Shawnette Heard on a movie trailer for an upcoming movie called “Drama Rama”, and along with some of his best friends, he performed at the “Lady of Soul” awards with 3LW. In Spring of 2004 he was one of two principal dancers for gospel artist, Tonex, doing shows in various locations from, Las Vegas, to Washington D.C. and cities in between. Dee currently teaches intermediate/advanced classes in studios throughout San Diego, including choreographing for local dance teams such as Acencion, and Formality. In the future he hopes to enhance his skills in choreographing as well as dancing, and freestyle. He someday wants to try to move to LA to pursue his dancing career as dancers say “full out” not just to say he tried, but to actually make a life of it someday. And that’s the latest on “D”.
