A Chicago native, Lee has been dancing all his life, but it wasn't until he attended the University of Illinois and joined a small hip-hop dance team(Dance2XS) that he became serious about his craft. MEET APRIL RODRIGUEZ
Thursday November 15: Hype Studios 9:00 to 10:30

April Joy Rodriguez began dancing Hula at age 7 in the city of Carson, California. It wasn't until the age of 18 though, that April took her first Hip Hop class. Her early training began with SuperDave Royster and Jayson Wright. With their mentorship, she began to develop a deep love for soul, groove, and dance.

In her first year of college, April was introduced to the Boogiezone community through competing with Kaba Modern. Since then, she's danced with various choreographers for different projects. Choreographers include: Jay Chris Moore, Jason Bueno, Jed Florano, and Jun Quemado. Although living miles away from San Diego, California, she also trained with SuperGalactic Beat Manipulators under the directorship of KJ Gonzales, Ben Chung, Lando Wilkins, and Kevin Brewer.

At 22 years old, she now dances for Gigi Torres, alongside other powerhouses, in an all-female group called "Essence Dance Company," where they focus on showcasing their strength as women and hope to become positive symbols to others in that way. Within this summer, April taught workshops with Essence ladies Audrey Benson, Aimee Lucas, Candace Brown, and also with Funkanometry SF ladies Mariel Martin, and Ellen Kim in different cities such as San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Tempe, Arizona.

"Apes" feels very blessed to be surrounded by passionate teachers, as she believes she's in the beginning stages of her dancing career. There is still much to learn. She would like to thank everyone she's worked with because she gains a different lesson from each person and their drive inspires her day by day. "THANK YOU, YOUTUBE!!!!!" She would like to also thank her family and friends for their undying support, and God for his unconditional love. April Joy has so many role models and lives off of the positive vibes of others. She hopes that, in her work and in her life, she will eventually become even a little bit of an inspiration to others and a contribution to the dance community.

11.06.07 - Ben Chung

About Ben Chung

Ben Chung was born and raised in Panorama City, CA. At a young he became intrigued by the hip hop culture, particularly with the element of Bboying and freestyle dance. In 2001, Ben joined DVS dance troupe, of which he was co-director for a year, and stepped into the competitive collegiate hip hop dance circuit. After transferring to UCI in 2002, he went on to dance with and choreograph for the competitive collegiate team, Kaba Modern. Since then, Ben became known for his unique style of blending old skool popping elements with his personal new skool flavor. After graduating from UCI in 2002 with a BA in Film Studies, he went on to dance and choreograph for the professional dance company, Funkanometry Los Angeles. Through Funkanometry LA, he was able to showcase his choreography in the Monsters of Hip Hop Show in 2005, which marked his entry into the LA dance industry.

Ben steadily reps his crew, the original Jabbawockeez Crew (who can be seen on America’s Got Talent Season 2, MTV’s Next, and spotlighted in the upcoming feature film Step Up 2). Along side of Kevin Brewer of the Jabbawockeez, Ben is also a Co-Artistic Director of the dance company, the Super Galactic Beat Manipulators (one branch of the 4-part “Family Royale” unit) based out of San Diego, CA. Ben recently showcased his choreography again at the Monsters of Hip Hop Show in August 2007. Ben continues to work within the LA dance industry and is always focused on sharpening his craft by teaching, taking classes, and practicing with his crew, and aspires to contribute to hip hop culture by inspiring this generation and the ones to come.
